Nordfab Ducting for Process Ventilation & Dust Collection

Cyclones

Nordfab cyclones are designed as a pre-separators in dust extraction systems. The main objective is to remove coarse and heavy particulates from an air stream before the air reaches a main dust collector (e.g., cartridge or baghouse units). Typical application functions include:

  • Pre-separation upstream of primary dust collectors, reducing load on filters and extending filter life.
  • Bulk material capture and discharge ahead of industrial dust collection systems or fans to protect downstream equipment.
  • Standalone coarse dust collection where very fine filtration is not critical.
  • Integration into ducted extraction networks serving multiple machines or processes in manufacturing environments.
  • Supporting compliance with workplace air quality standards by reducing airborne particulate before final extraction

Airflow Capacity and Performance

Nordfab industrial cyclones generally are sized according to system volume flow requirements and dust load. In typical industrial contexts:

  • Airflow capacity is matched to ducting and fan performance such that velocity and pressure drop through the cyclone are suitable for the target dust grain size and volume.
  • Cyclones are commonly designed to handle high (m³/h) airflows compatible with large ducting systems (ranging from several thousand to tens of thousands m³/h for industrial dust collector units).
  • Performance efficiency depends on the design geometry, inlet velocity, dust type and load; conventional cyclones often separate 80–95%+ of larger particulates before reaching downstream
    collectors.
  • The objective in Nordfab Pty Ltd installations is coarse particle capture, reducing demand on main filters, improving dust extraction system stability, and lowering maintenance frequency.

Specific airflow capacities are typically defined in engineering designs for each installation based on required volumetric flow rates, ducting resistance, fan capacity and target separation efficiency.

Construction and Features

Nordfab cyclones construction and features include:
  • Heavy-duty fabrication: robust steel construction (galvanised or powder-coated) capable of industrial duty and long service life.
  • No filters/moving parts within the cyclone itself: minimal maintenance and no routine filter changeover necessary.
  • Tangential inlet design promotes strong centrifugal pressure to separate heavier dust particles from the air stream
  • Simple discharge arrangement for dust collection into hoppers or bins, facilitating straightforward emptying.
  • Designed to be integration with fans, ducting, and dust extraction units in modular systems.
  • Pressure drop and static resistance are engineered to align with the broader system resistance, ensuring adequate airflow performance without excessive fan energy use.

Nordfab’s broader equipment range (e.g., MDC dust collectors) are compatible, as part of an integrated system, that includes automated cleaning and modular expansion.

Typical Industrial Sectors

Nordfab’s cyclones, as part of dust extraction systems, are supplied into a broad spectrum of industrial sectors where dust generation is a concern. Representative sectors include:

  • Timber and woodworking (sawmills, joinery, cabinet manufacturing)
  • Plastics and rubber processing
  • Metal fabrication and finishing
  • Glass and ceramic production
  • Mining and mineral processing
  • Food and grain handling
  • Chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing
  • Foundries and heavy industry
  • Construction materials processing (e.g., concrete, cement)
  • Educational and research workshops with dust extraction needs

These sectors generate dust streams that benefit from cyclonic pre-separation to improve overall extraction system resilience, reduce maintenance demands, and improve air quality compliance.
