Leakage of oil mists and cutting fluids from machinery and ductwork can cause health hazards and safety risks for workers, including respiratory ailments and increased risks of accidents. Nearly all machining operations create oil mist, the aerosol formed when oil is used for cooling or lubricating during the machining of metal or plastic components. Proper ventilation is required to prevent oil mists from fouling equipment, products, and the working environment.

Nordfab Ducting offers QFS™ Sealed Duct to protect against leakage in ducting used in ventilation systems where oil mist and smoke are contaminants.
Nordfab's easy to install three part system for sealing ductwork to prevent leakage includes:
- QFS Gaskets in standard black polymer or optional silicone material (learn about our recently improved design which features better sealing and ease of installation),
- QFS O-rings, and
- QFS Sealant.
The combination of these Oil Mist System components with Nordfab’s Duct Pipe, which features solid welded seams, provides excellent leakage protection, in comparison to lockform seams which allow air to leak (view movie showing comparison).
Locations where sealed ducting may be advisable can include:
- steel mills,
- rolling mills,
- rubber and plastic manufacturing facilities,
- hardening and heat treating facilities, and metalwork processes such as turning, cutting, milling, grinding, drilling.
The use of Nordfab’s Sealed Duct system eliminates:
- Cost of weld labor to fully weld each duct seam
- Cost of highly skilled workers to install ductwork
- Time needed for welding seams
- Gooey caulks or sealants
The QFS system makes use of standard Quick-Fit® (QF®) duct components which can be taken apart and reconfigured to accommodate machinery moves and floor plan changes.

*Due to variables beyond our control, Nordfab Ducting cannot guarantee a leak proof system in all installations, even when using the QFS sealant & “leak free” QFS gaskets. Some of the variables that impact this include: the craftsmanship of the duct installation, the chemicals within the duct, and the expertise of the designer.
